Consider a Request by Councilmember Napolitano and Mayor Pro Tem Montgomery to Discuss Options for a Historical Museum Facility (Public Works Director Katsouleas and Parks and Recreation Director Leyman).
DISCUSS AND PROVIDE DIRECTION
Council should continue with what it set out to do nearly a year ago insofar as protecting the city's historical collection and making it available to its citizens. Staff should consult with the City of Redondo Beach and their historical society to see how they've succeeded in converting the 1904 Queen Anne House into a wonderful museum that's accessible and available to all. With proper planning, this could be done quickly and efficiently instead of the glacial pace at which it's moving now.
There is no way we will get rid of the Schoolhouse, so spend the necessary money on that. Also, there are a lot of things we need prior to a "Historical Museum Facility" (and can use existing facilities -- Cultural Arts, Library, Joslyn as needed). You folks need to spend more time on comprehensive, long-term focused issues instead of being constantly distracted by one-offs that are worthy in isolation. As David Wachtfogel once said: " The city will never run out of worthy things to fund."
