I'd like encourage the Manhattan Beach Library participate in Banned Books Week later this year, from September 18-24th. It seems with recent local attempts to ban specific books and ideas from our school library link lists, optional reading lists already requiring parent permission, and English and History curricula, we could use a little raised awareness about all the great and classic literature that has at one time or another been banned over the years.
I've heard that even simple displays of these books if nothing else, can be quite enlightening. Even further, a speaker or two on the topics of Freedom of Written Expression, Intellectual Freedom, the American Library Association's Bill of Rights, and the Constitutionality (or lack thereof) of Censorship seem to be important topics of the day.
